Participatory Decision Making

Overview

RealtimeAid works using a network node model in Al Raqqa Syria, whereby local Changemakers function as community nodes and create linkages between different groups, networks and individuals. Through investing and strengthening community nodes RealtimeAid envisages more sustainable initiatives and powerfully networked communities, able to draw on their own resources and access support through these linkages

The following outlines the process for selecting projects run by Changemakers and local initiatives in remote locations and contexts of conflict. A participatory decision making process  is used in order to be inclusive of all groups such as women, different social, ethnic or religious groups, young people.

PURPOSE

The purpose of a participatory grantmaking approach can be varied e.g., build/strengthen a field or movement, surface issues or trends, empower peers/constituents, leadership development, capacity building, get more informed results, new ideas/innovation, general support. For RealtimeAid we aim to shift the power balance from resting with international donors to local people. Through the process of participatory decision making the community identifies and is accountable for supporting the most relevant projects to be successful.

The application is painless and straightforward, applicants only need a smartphone in order to apply. We use digital solutions to connect our Awardees directly to an ecosystem of support.

Impact

Our Local Decision Award’s programme supports local impact projects with mentoring, training, financial support, and network referrals so they can continue, expand, and sustain their own social projects in their communities. Applicants will join a network where they can:
